Toilet paper is a disposable paper product primarily used to clean the anus and surrounding area of feces after defecation and to clean the perineum of urine after urination. The toilet paper also acts as a layer of protection for the hands during the cleaning process. Most commercially sold toilet paper is safe for use with septic systems.

A popular alternative to toilet paper in many cultures is a bidet shower which attaches to the toilet and cleans using water. Some choose to use toilet paper in conjunction with the bidet shower to dry areas after washing. This approach reduces the use of toilet paper instead of eliminating its need, but it is optional.
