Sun scald is a form of permanent tree bark damage caused by the sun warming and activating dormant tree tissue in the winter only to refreeze and be killed in the cold of the night.

Sun scald can be prevented by positioning understory plants under the tree on the side of the plant that faces the sun. The understory plants help filter and block the sun from causing damage to the tree bark.
