Propagation: Seed - sow in a cold frame in spring. Only just cover the seed and do not allow the compost to dry out. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.

Division in spring or autumn[1]. Very easy, larger clumps can be replanted direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller clumps and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the spring.

Cultivation: We have very little information on this species and do not know if it will be hardy in Britain, though judging by its native range it should succeed outdoors in most parts of this country. See the plants native habitat for ideas on its cultivation needs.

Plants in this genus seem to be immune to the predations of rabbits[2].

Range: E. Asia - China, Japan.

Habitat: Grassy places in lowland and mountains all over Japan[3].

Edibility: Seed - cooked. Ground into a meal and used with cereal powders when making bread etc[4][5].

Soil: Can grow in light, medium, and heavy soils.
