A decoction is made by simmering plant matter in boiling water to make an extract.

A decoction is an extract made by simmering tougher parts of a plant in boiling water. As this extraction method uses heat, it should not be used for heat sensitive compounds. Fresh or dried herbs can be used and should be cut into smaller pieces before decocting. Can be served hot or cold.

Use 20 g dried or 40 g of fresh herbs to 3 cups of water. Should boil down to 2 cups.

Decoction steps:

  1. By placing the herbs in a saucepan, cover with cold water and bring to a boil.
  2. Simmer for 20 to 30 minutes.
  3. Strain the liquid through a sieve and store in an air tight container in a cool place.
