Chrysanthemum carinatum (common name: tricolor chrysanthemum)

Propagation: Seed - sow spring in situ. The seed usually germinates within 10 - 18 days at 15°c. Autumn sowings succeed in mild areas[1].

Cultivation: Succeeds in ordinary garden soil and in acid soils[2][3]. Prefers a well-drained fertile soil in full sun[4]. Prefers light shade in the summer[5][3].

Commonly grown in the flower garden[2], it is cultivated for its edible young shoots in China[6]. It makes a good edging plant[3].

Range: N. Africa - Possibly Morocco.

Habitat: The original habitat is obscure.

Edibility: Young shoots - raw or cooked[5][3][7]. Use them before the plant flowers, they are at their best when 12cm or less tall[5]. The leaves quickly wilt once picked, so are best harvested as required[K].

Soil: Can grow in light, medium, and heavy soils.

Drainage: Prefers well drained soil.
