Archaea, one of the three domains that encompass all living objects, are the only organisms that have membranes composed of branched hydrocarbon chains. This domain contains only one kingdom, called Archaebacteria, but despite the kingdom name, Archaea are not bacteria.

All Archaea organisms are unicellular and often live in extreme and harsh environments like hot springs and salt lakes.
