Range: E. Asia - China, Japan.

Habitat: Woodland in central and southern Japan[1].

Medicinal: The curved thorns on the stems are antispasmodic, carminative, febrifuge and hepatic[2]. A decoction is used in the treatment of infantile convulsions, headaches, dizziness, hypertension and apoplexy[2]. The decoction should not be overcooked[2].

Usage: The hollow stem can be used as a siphon[3].

Soil: Can grow in light, medium, and heavy soils.
