A tincture is a plant extract made by soaking herbs in alcohol to dissolve active plant constituents, making tinctures stronger than herbal infusions and decoctions. Tinctures can last up to 2 to 3 years if stored in a dark glass bottle.

200 g dried or 300 g fresh herbs to 1 quart of alcohol. Vodka is recommended but rum can also be used to hide the bitter taste of some herbs.

Tincture steps:

  1. Chop herbs into small pieces and place in a clean glass jar.
  2. Pour alcohol over the herbs until completely submerged.
  3. Close the jar and shake. Store in a dark place for 2 to 3 weeks. Shake jar every other day.
  4. Strain herbs and store the tincture in a clean, dark glass jar.
